Customer remarks about Fossil Shell Flour

Our customers have built our business by recommending our products to their friends. The customer who has used the product the longest is Frank Zimmerman of Tucson, Arizona--there is no way of guessing how many people use Fossil Shell Flour because he recommended it to them. Over 30 years ago, in Kansas, he fed it to his dairy cows and all other animals one would find around a farm. After selling out and moving to Arizona, he feeds it to the Quarter horses he raises on his A to Z Farm. And he freely recommends it to all his contacts. His operation has fly and odor under control and his animals are worm free. Anyone wishing to talk to Frank is free to call.

The next longest use we know of is James Hussey (deceased). Mr. Hussey used the Fossil Shell Flour over 28 years on his dairy herd. He wrote us two testimonial letters 25 years apart, detailing the benefits from adding Fossil Shell Flour to his rations. Mr. Hussey was President of the Arizona Dairyman's Association for many years and exhibited his stock at the Arizona State Fair for 70 years. The City of Phoenix grew up around his dairy, but he had no fly or odor problems and the benefits to his animals and his business was very positive. Anyone wanting copies of his letters is welcome to request them from us.

Is DE Hazardous?

Excerpt from The IPM Practitioner, Monitoring the Field of Pest Management, William Quarles, Volume XIV, Number 5/6, May/June 1992.

"Both swimming pool grade and natural diatomaceous earth come from the same fossil sources, but they are processed differently. The natural grades are mined, dried, ground, sifted and bagged. The pool grade is chemically treated and partially melted and consequently contains crystalline silica which can be a respiratory hazard. Thus, it is imperative that only natural diatomaceous earth be used for insect control. This non-crystalline silica is not a hazard as the human body apparently can dissolve it."

"Ingestion of diatomaceous earth is not toxic to mammals. Rats fed a daily diet containing 5% freshwater diatomaceous earth show no abnormalities after 90 days (Bertke 1964). Dairy farms sometimes feed their animals food containing 1 to 2% diatomaceous earth to control worms and other internal parasites (Allen 1972). Impoverished humans add "fossil flour" to their baked goods in order to stretch their flour supply (Cummins 1975). It is so safe for use on food that the FDA has exempted diatomaceous earth from requirements of fixed residue levels when added to stored grain (Fed. Reg. 1961). The U.S. EPA also allows its use in food storage and processing areas (Fed. Reg. 1981)."

The Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, sets "tolerances" on poisonous chemical insecticides because residues of these insecticides are known to cause cancer and other alarming physiological effects when introduced into the bodies of test animals.

The Department of Agriculture in Michigan said in a letter:

"Our animal pathologist has examined the vital organs and intestinal components submitted, both macroscopically and microscopically, and has found no visible evidence of organ abnormalities.

These components consisted of brain, thyroid, rib section, lung, heart, liver, true stomach, small intestine section, large intestine section, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and fore stomach.

These organs were submitted under affidavit as being from a slaughtered dairy cow having free choice access to fossil shell flour for approximately five years."

The University of Arkansas did a study to determine whether the addition of diatomaceous earth was harmful to chickens. Their conclusion: "It posed no threat."

Diatomaceous Earth Products

There are essentially three diatomaceous earth products:

  •  100% Pure Organic Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth from a fresh water source - Packaged as Fossil Shell Flour, as FPP for Humans, and as Grain Storage Product.
  •  Packaged as a general Insecticide, Pet Product, Commercial Insecticide, and Fire Ant Product (Has 0.02 percent Pyrethrum)
  •  Packaged as Garden and Plant Product and Farm and Field Product. (Has 0.01 % Pyrethrum)

The reason for the different packaging is that the Federal Government (the EPA and the FDA) requires that “insecticides” are packaged and labeled with warnings and identifying all surfaces that it can be used on as well as what insects it can kill – regardless of whether or not those products are actually toxic or not. This is a nuisance to manufacturers but a huge revenue generator for the government. The fact is that we don’t know of ANY insects that cannot be killed by our products. The other problem is that the government is extremely reluctant to call our products “safe” even though their own tests revealed no negative reactions at any quantities tested. If they admitted that our insecticides were “safe” or “harmless”, they would lose over $30,000 in registration fees from our products every year. The fact is that all of our products are 100% non-toxic and are derived from natural sources. We know of NO reports of any harm being done to plants, birds, or warm-blooded animals – Including pets and small children!

Our products do not use strong poisons or experimental chemicals to kill insects, they kill “mechanically”. They cut, and puncture the insects exoskeleton and drain their vital fluid. Because of this, we have never heard of any insects being able to develop immunity to our products as they do to chemical insecticides. In fact, insects are developing immunity to traditional insecticides at an alarming rate today. Because our products kill mechanically, we believe that our products are the best and surest option for killing insects.

Here are some of the uses found for our products:

  • As a feed additive for livestock, birds, pets, and humans (reported to be beneficial in eliminating parasites from the intestinal tract, and adds 14 trace minerals to the system, reduce odors, remove harmful bacteria from the upper intestinal tract, reduce fly hatch, and stop animals from licking holes and chewing fence posts).
  • As a soil conditioner. It holds over 6 times its weight in water, and increases the nitrogen levels.
  • As a barrier against slugs and snails.
  • To remove odors – shake on manure, urine, vomit, or spills to absorb odors and moisture.
  • As a health and beauty product for hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints.

In Europe, DE is used as a health and beauty aid to improve and strengthen hair, skin, nails, bones, and teeth.

  • With feed for chickens and turkeys - makes shells harder, reduced mortality rate, reduce odors, dries droppings quickly, reduces fly hatch. Sprinked on the floor and in nest areas, prevents development of harmful parasites and mites.
  • Fed to hogs or calves with scours - stops scours after one feeding. Used routinely, prevents scours.
  • In dairy operations - produce more milk, reduces mastitis, reduces odors and flies, calms cows and calfs, greater conversion of feed.
  • To dust animal bedding, to kill fleas, ticks, chiggers, lice, and roaches.
  • In attics and walls as an insect barrier.
