Customer remarks about Fossil Shell Flour
- visit Testimonials page
Our customers have built our business by recommending our products to their friends. The
customer who has used the product the longest is Frank Zimmerman of Tucson, Arizona--there
is no way of guessing how many people use Fossil Shell Flour because he recommended it to
them. Over 30 years ago, in Kansas, he fed it to his dairy cows and all other animals one
would find around a farm. After selling out and moving to Arizona, he feeds it to the
Quarter horses he raises on his A to Z Farm. And he freely recommends it to all his
contacts. His operation has fly and odor under control and his animals are worm free.
Anyone wishing to talk to Frank is free to call.
The next longest use we know of is James Hussey (deceased). Mr. Hussey used the Fossil
Shell Flour over 28 years on his dairy herd. He wrote us two testimonial letters 25 years
apart, detailing the benefits from adding Fossil Shell Flour to his rations. Mr. Hussey
was President of the Arizona Dairyman's Association for many years and exhibited his stock
at the Arizona State Fair for 70 years. The City of Phoenix grew up around his dairy, but
he had no fly or odor problems and the benefits to his animals and his business was very
positive. Anyone wanting copies of his letters is welcome to request them from us.
Is DE Hazardous?
Excerpt from The IPM Practitioner, Monitoring the Field of Pest Management, William
Quarles, Volume XIV, Number 5/6, May/June 1992.
"Both swimming pool grade and natural diatomaceous earth come from the same fossil
sources, but they are processed differently. The natural grades are mined, dried, ground,
sifted and bagged. The pool grade is chemically treated and partially melted and
consequently contains crystalline silica which can be a respiratory hazard. Thus, it is
imperative that only natural diatomaceous earth be used for insect control. This
non-crystalline silica is not a hazard as the human body apparently can dissolve it."
"Ingestion of diatomaceous earth is not toxic to mammals. Rats fed a daily diet
containing 5% freshwater diatomaceous earth show no abnormalities after 90 days (Bertke
1964). Dairy farms sometimes feed their animals food containing 1 to 2% diatomaceous earth
to control worms and other internal parasites (Allen 1972). Impoverished humans add
"fossil flour" to their baked goods in order to stretch their flour supply
(Cummins 1975). It is so safe for use on food that the FDA has exempted diatomaceous earth
from requirements of fixed residue levels when added to stored grain (Fed. Reg. 1961). The
U.S. EPA also allows its use in food storage and processing areas (Fed. Reg. 1981)."
The Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, sets
"tolerances" on poisonous chemical insecticides because residues of these
insecticides are known to cause cancer and other alarming physiological effects when
introduced into the bodies of test animals.
The Department of Agriculture in Michigan said in a letter:
"Our animal pathologist has examined the vital organs and intestinal components
submitted, both macroscopically and microscopically, and has found no visible evidence of
organ abnormalities.
These components consisted of brain, thyroid, rib section, lung, heart, liver, true
stomach, small intestine section, large intestine section, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and
fore stomach.
These organs were submitted under affidavit as being from a slaughtered dairy cow having
free choice access to fossil shell flour for approximately five years."
The University of Arkansas did a study to determine whether the addition of diatomaceous
earth was harmful to chickens. Their conclusion: "It posed no threat."

Grain Storage Product
Throughout the history of humankind, one of the major problems is having to share our
grain with insects. Various methods have had different levels of success, but modern
people thought they had the answer when they started manufacturing toxic, persistent and
deadly chemicals.
At first it seemed to work, but two things began to happen. People began to develop
illnesses from the residues of these chemicals left in the grain they used for food. Also,
the insects began to develop immunity to any chemical, regardless of how toxic.
In 1962, the PERMA-GUARD COMPANY got a patent on the use of pure "food grade"
Diatomaceous Earth, which, when added to grain killed the bugs that were present, and
protected the grain from further invasions. And the bugs could not become immune, They
were killed by physical action--not chemical!
Seven pounds per ton of pure, "food grade" Diatomaceous Earth, added to the grain so
that every kernel is coated, can protect the grain for as long as needed. Instead of
retreating grain every six months as is required by chemical treatments, Perma-Guard Grain Protectant
need be added only once, regardless of how long the storage lasts. (We have
even been told by farmers in Idaho that two pounds per ton is all that is
needed). By treating with DE, the grain is even protected during storage.
When the grain is to be used, the Diatomaceous Earth can be easily removed, but need not
be. Because our Perma-Guard DE is "food grade," makes no difference in taste or
in cooking quality, and adds 14 trace minerals, why not leave it in?
The following guidelines are from
Methods to
control stored grain insects
Diatomaceous earth
Control of rusty grain beetle can be achieved by using a
nontoxic dust made from prehistoric diatoms (diatomaceous
earth). When rusty grain beetles come in contact with this dust,
the waxy covering on their exoskeleton is absorbed, leaving them
prone to dehydration and death. The product is applied to grain
as it is augered into the bin, and is most effective when
applied to dry grain at harvest. Control can take up to five or
six weeks.
